IT’S TIME TO BUILD!!!

I Corinthians 3:9-11

“For we are partners working together for God, and you are God’s field. You are also God’s building. Using the gift that God gave me, I did the work of an expert builder and laid the foundation, and another man is building on it. But each one must be careful how he builds. For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid.”

Today’s English Version (TEV)

Every generation is called by God to build something for His glory. Noah built an ark. Abraham looked for a city whose builder and maker is God. Moses built a Tabernacle. David built a nation. Solomon built a Temple. Jesus told Peter that he was building a church. What is God calling you and me to build for His glory? There are many noteworthy things we could build such as a new ministry, outreach or program. We could have grandiose ideas of building new churches and facilities. Are these the things we should focus on or is there a greater achievement awaiting the church’s energies?! Yes I believe there is! God is calling us to BUILD PEOPLE!

Jesus Christ left no buildings or statues in memory of his great achievements. He did not leave organizations or trust funds. He left nothing of physical value behind. In fact, Jesus recommended we store our treasures in heaven. Without any of these material accoutrements to aid His cause how did Jesus leave such an indelible imprint on our world?! Jesus was a people builder. The first order of business was his choosing of the twelve disciples. Every aspect of Jesus’ ministry was aimed directly at the hearts of people he met. We are called to carry on the work of building people in Jesus Christ.

Building people requires relationships. No true Christian ministry can take place outside of a relationship. The church is not fashioned in a laboratory test tube with religious semantics and church dogma. It is built on the streets and in the homes of our cities. What we need is a good old fashioned revival of how to love one another as Christ loved us. We need that old time Holy Ghost that makes us love everybody!

Relationships require such things as trust. Can we keep a confidence? Do we treat one another with empathy and fairness? Relationships also require involvement. It takes time being together beyond the church service. It takes an investment and a sacrifice of our personal comforts to build the church God would have us build. Am I as a pastor; are we as a church body ready to take on the task of building a church for the glory of God? If so, then let us increase our people skills; let us channel our resources to reach the hearts of the people we come in media with. Don’t just hand out a tract, business card or flier. Give a relationship that will heal, strengthen and build those God leads us to.
